How I Transformed a Side Hustle Idea into a Published Coloring Book in Just 4 Days
As a clinician, mother, and entrepreneur, finding time for new projects often feels like an impossible puzzle. But with a clear system and a community for support, I've discovered that even the busiest professionals can achieve incredible things—like creating and self-publishing a coloring book in just four days. Here’s how I did it, and how you can do it too.
The Spark of Inspiration
After learning about using local book libraries as a novel distribution method, I was inspired to create mini coloring books that could act as both standalone items and promotional tools for a larger project. With Mother's Day approaching, I wanted to launch quickly. Previously, I had taken over a month to create a coloring book due to procrastination and lack of accountability. This time, I was determined to succeed faster.
Setting the Stage
I aimed to create a product that was simple yet in demand, staying within the niche of my specialty practice. The biggest challenge was dedicating time to sit down and methodically work through the creation process without getting lost along the way.
Objectives
My goal was not only to complete the coloring book in 4 days but also to integrate marketing right from the start. This approach ensured that the product would be ready to sell immediately upon completion.
Approach
I divided the project into four days:
Day 1: Defined the niche, selected images, and set the theme.
Day 2: Organized the layout and edited images to fit the book’s aesthetic.
Day 3: Researched keywords and categories to optimize the book’s Amazon listing.
Day 4: Focused on final uploads, completing the cover, and tying everything together.
Despite challenges like software updates and personal commitments, the structured approach and community support from a Facebook group I'm active in provided the necessary encouragement to keep moving forward.
Results
The coloring book was uploaded to KDP and is pending approval. Though there are aspects I’d tweak, I’m incredibly proud of what I accomplished in such a short time. The project even includes a new "registration" page to help grow my email list.
Analysis
This process proved that what often seems too complex and time-consuming can be simplified and achieved with proper planning and support. It demonstrates that a well-organized approach can drastically cut down on the time typically required for such projects.
